Most people older than 30 are not familiar with computers or internet; some may like furries but they do not know a "furdom" exists due to lack of communication with the furry world.
I for one got involved in furries from TLK forums at lionking.org in 1997. I knew about anthros then but I didn't know there were other people who liked them.

(話說笨狼第一次看到的獸人作品是在一個18+的網頁。 然後就變化成今天的獸人正太控了
