Allow gray wolves in the northern Rockies to fully recover before removing federal protections
Last 100 Days: Just days before exiting, the Bush administration made a second attempt to prematurely remove federal Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the northern Rockies.
First 100 Days: Earthjustice succeeded in blocking the first attempt and will challenge the second if needed. President Obama, who recently halted this and other last-minute regulations, should abandon delisting efforts until gray wolves are truly recovered.
Gray wolves in the northern Rockies, once driven to the brink of extinction by hunting, trapping, and poisoning, are making a comeback that could turn into a true success story. But the exiting Bush administration renewed attempts in mid-January 2009 -- the second time in nine months -- to eliminate federal protections for gray wolves prematurely, this time in Montana and Idaho.
If the delisting goes forward, gray wolf numbers may decline due to state hunting plans by as many as 500 wolves from the current population of around 1,450 wolves. And there will be nothing to prevent the states from driving the wolf population down even further, to as few as 300 to 450 wolves. A fully-recovered, sustainable population, independent scientists say, would number somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 wolves. It's critical that President Obama maintain federal protections for gray wolves in the northern Rockies so they can make a complete recovery. Because the Bush delisting wasn't finalized before he left office, President Obama has the opportunity to abandon the ill-founded delisting decision and keep us on the path toward wolf recovery.
