Huckleberry Finn in Macau
Huckleberry Finn in Macau
My name is Huckleberry Finn. I am eleven years old. I am a boy living in a small town on the Mississippi River, called St.Petersburg. I love adventure with my best friend – Tom Sayer, and I have just finished an adventure recently. I have written a book about it too. You must want to know about a boy’s life in Mississippi. It is exciting and legendary. Also, I wanted to have a new adventure.
The days were boring, until that day I went to the riverside with other boys.
‘Hey! I found a treasure map here!’ I said, holding a sheet of old paper. All the boys came to me and wanted to see it. ‘I found a glass bottle here. Inside there’s a treasure map, and it may be real!’ I said, and passed it on to each of them. ‘I think we can find the treasure and have a fantastic adventure! ’said Tom, our leader. We all agreed and started to plan our new adventure.
Half of us were in charge of making a boat and half of us were in charge of collecting data, because the treasure map showed the treasure is in Macau – a place that we have never heard about!
A week ago, we held a meeting by the riverside.
‘Macau is some small islands in Asia. And it is facing the South China Sea in the east and south.’ A boy said.
‘Oh, we will have a very long trip to Macau!’ I said.
‘Yes, Huck, The trip is long so that we need to prepare a lot of food. Maybe…bring as much money and food as you can,’ said Tom.
We all nodded to him and continued the meeting. Suddenly, a big ship bound for the riverside, we were surprised and ran away as fast as possible.
I refuged behind a rock with Tom. A few men came out form the ship; and we found that, they are pirates! We eavesdropped their chat, and discovered they heard some boys got a treasure map of Macau, and they wanted to get it!
I felt a bit uneasy, and also lots of flushed of it.
The pirates went to the village and then went back to their pirate ship.
‘Luckily, only some boys,’ one of them said.
‘Yes, a piece of cake,’ a fat pirate said.
‘I think they are talking about us. They want to catch us and get the map,’I said quietly.
‘Yes, I think we got into trouble. We have some problems now,’ Tom said tranquilly.
I wanted to move a bit to the front and suddenly, I slipped and fell down.
The pirates discovered us! They caught me and got the map. Tom wanted to save me, but I didn’t want him to be in danger like me, so I told him to run away. ‘Run away! Flee now, Tom!’
The pirates sent me to a prison in the cabin. There was dirty and small. Two children were jailed there too. They were a boy of the same age as me and a younger girl.
‘Hello, my name’s Huckleberry Finn. I come from St.Petersburg.’ I said hello to them.
‘Nice to meet you, Huckleberry. I think I have seen you…Are you Huck?’ the boy asked me.
‘Yes. But sorry, I think I don’t know you. What is your name?’ I said.
‘My name’s Edgar Comme and she is my younger sister, Rainnie. We come form St.Petersburg too,’ the boy said.
‘Oh, I remember you now! I always call you “Edgardo” and you got lost last year.’ I said happily.
‘Yes, we were caught by the pirates last year, and we need to work for them by cleaning the ship. By the way, why did they catch you?’ the boy said.
‘I find a treasure map by the riverside, and they caught me and got the map now,’ I said.
‘I think this is the time we escape. And we can find the treasure by ourselves,’ said Edgar.
‘The pirates go out to rob the first Monday every odd month, we can escape at that time,’ said Rainnie.
‘Good idea! Let us…’We talked about it for the whole night, and started to prepare for the escape.
Some months ago, the pirate ship was crossing the South China Sea, and this was the time we escaped.
The first Monday of May, The pirates also went out to rob and we escaped.
Rainnie used some out of shape forks to open the lock, and Edgar pointed the way for us. We went to the deck, and then we found a lifeboat. Edgar and Rainnie walked around the cabins to look for food, money, arms and the treasure map! I went to the land to kill a wild pig for its blood for disguise as I have been killed (If you have read my first book, you may know what I will do just like I escape from my father.) and decorated the prison and cabin like it was robbed by some robbers. We also toppled the blood on the deck and the sea. We left immediately.
On the boat I thought if I had stayed on the pirate ship, what would have been changed. Would I join them and become a great pirate one day? Being a pirate would lead an exciting and adventurous life. Would I yearn for it? But I thought I would choose friendship and freedom. By the way, adventure was fascinating because we could play with friends and feel free on the trip. If we needed to be controled by others, adventure would not be meaningful any more.Yes,I would treasure my friendship and freedom forever.
After two weeks, we arrived at Macau, the place of the treasures.
Macau is a Portuguese colony, and it is a little fish village. Most of the Macau people are fishmen. They built A-Ma Temple and dedicated it to the seafarers' goddess dated back to the early 16th century…Why did I say so much about it?
Because the treasures were there, we needed to find out the A-Ma Temple.
We met many people there but they all couldn’t speak English/ How terrible! Luckily, we found a Portuguese who could speak a little English.
He told us about the legend of A-Ma, and where we could find the temple.
We went to the south-western end of the Macau Peninsula by boat.
It was noisy there. People played firecrackers, and performed lions dances. Portuguese said that they used firecrackers to for scare away evil spirits, during the festival of A-Ma. That temple was distinguished by its beautiful tiled roofs and spectacular views from the upper gardens.
A-Ma Temple consisted of prayer halls, pavilions and courtyards built into the boulder-strewn hill and connected by winding paths through moon gates and tiny gardens. At the entrance there was a large rock on which a traditional sailing junk was engraved. On other boulders, red characters invoking the gods or repeating a prayer were carved. They were really beautiful.
We followed the map, passing through all the people, and finally arrived at the place where the treasure was hidden – an old tree.
We waited unit all people went back home, and used some boughs to dig.
‘I think there isn’t any treasure,’ said Rainnie.
‘Have confidence to me, okay?’ said Edgar, while he was digging with me.
‘But...’ said Rainnie
‘Oh! Troublesome! There are so many roots. It’s not easy to dig!’ I said. I didn’t want them to quarrel.
‘Can we press them down?’ said Edgar.
‘Maybe. Let me press them down, and you dig.’ I said,
‘Okay,’ said Edgar.
We dug for the whole night and got nothing.
‘Hey! What is that?’ said Rainnie.
‘It’s the treasure box!’ said Edgar, ‘But why are there roots growing from it?’
‘Oh, I see, the treasure is real. It is the tree,’ I said. ‘Trees give us air and food. They also give us bower. They are really treasures.’
‘We have got an amazing ending this time, right?’ said Edgar.
‘No, you were not,’ said a man, he was walking to us.
We knew that he was the captain of the pirates and we got into trouble.
He was walking to us.

‘Ahhhhhhhhh!’
He fell down to the hole that we had just dug, and the sharp roots killed him.
We called the police, and they caught all the pirates. They thanked us for killing the captain of the pirates. They gave us a gift too, that is the pirate ship. We brought some seeds of that tree, and went back home by the ship.
Tom and the other boys welcomed us by the riverside. They were happy to see us again, and the Commes went back to their family.
Some years ago, the seeds became a tree house of children in Mississippi, I am afraid you won't be able to find me in St.Petersburg, because I always travel around the world by the pirate ship with Tom, Edgar and Rainnie.
