"So that's what you eat in your home town? that's delicious!" Terry, with his tail swing from left to right rapidly, sounded more like his exaggeration is still not good enough to say how much he liked the soup made from my secret home town recipe. The sense of steam and smell of tomato mix with other spices were floating around the room...
in a trench.
"Oh man! Thanks for the soup!" Terry licked the last drop on his spoon as he stands up from the ground, with the empty bowl on his paw. "Just leave the bowls and pots there, I will clean it up after I reported to captain" Then he pushed open the rotten door of the room, walked out into the cold air of winter with his M16.
There really weren't that many things to clean up, other than the empty pot that were used to boil water and cook soup, the cutting board with an army knife laying on top, the skins piled from the garlic and other left over, plus the spices jars, all sitting on the dirty trench floor. The place I was standing cannot be technically called "a room", but rather looked more like a cave because it is slightly underground. After I packed everything back into a small backpack that was used just for food and supply storage, I carried it out of the room and took a deep breath of the air of Christmas...
on the battlefield.
The observational post #71 stood silently in three quarters of a mile away back from the trenches, and it more or less resemble to the little clock tower in my home town. When I was young I use to play around the market under the clock tower, and when the bell sounded 5 times in a row I know it is time for me to be home. My family also has a little Christmas tradition about the clock tower - we would sit soundlessly in the living room a few minute before 12 o'clock at Dec 24th, and listen to the sounds from the clock tower at 12 PM. Then we would say Merry Christmas to each other than go to bed. Our family loved the peacefulness in the air as we wait for the bell, as if we were longing for Jesus Claus coming into our door and bring us joy and light.
Next day in the morning, my mother will make us soup - the same soup I just made in that dirty room - for everyone in the house as our breakfast. Then we will go to the church with friends and neighbor, wishing Merry Christmas to each other and sing Christmas tones that will never get bored or old. At noon, the adults will be busy in the house making cookies or preparing Christmas dinner, and kids like me will play with other kids on the snowy ground. God blessed the wolves, for I don't have to worry about cold because of my thick fur, and strong senses so I can dodge flying snow balls...
and bullets.
Good thing I didn't let my guard down as I was staring at the observational post, I almost got hit by an 5.56 right in the skull if I didn't dodge before hand. I immediately lay down and have the height of the trench as cover, while taking out my pistol and finish off my opponent on the other sides...
like a snowball fight.
I felt like I went back home for Christmas.
