在眾多聖誕歌曲中，〝The Twelfth Days of Christmas〞是一首大家耳熟能詳的曲子，在網站上你甚至可以找到www.12daysofchristmas.com及www.12days.com，那是一些賣聖誕禮品的網站，可見這12天是多麼令人歡心喜悅的時光！在教會中，從聖誕節12/25這一天開始到1/6耶穌顯靈日的12天是很特別的日子。為什麼是12？因為一年以12個月，因為基督有12個門徒，因為……



這是一首旋律輕快，頗為歡樂的曲子，原文對譯如下：

至於這首歌的由來，則是起源於16世紀，教會人士為了要傳頌教義而不被當權者壓迫(1558-1829年天主教被禁止)，才寫了這首歌，事實上是12個密碼，下文將原文及其說明刊載。

2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments 新舊約聖經

3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity, 信、望、愛

4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists四位福音作者 Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

5 Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch", which gives the history of man's fall from grace.
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.舊約聖經的開首五卷, 又稱摩西五經

6 Geese A-laying = the six days of creation 創世紀的六天

7 Swans A-swimming = the seven sacraments of the Holy Spirit Sacraments.
A Sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.
屬於聖靈的七個聖禮 (禮節)
The Sacraments are: Baptism, Confirmation, Penance, Euharist, Matrimony, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick.

8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes 八個福氣 (窮苦的人有福了...)

9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit 九個聖果, 即仁愛,喜樂,和平,忍耐,恩慈,良善,信實,溫柔,節制
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

10 Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments 十誡

11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles 十一個忠心門徒
Simon, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James, Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot.
(To bring the number back up to twelve after Judas fell away, Matthias was chosen by the remaining eleven apostles.)
